Here's the original structure. The shade bars across the top were installed without deck screws, which rusted and stained the patio below. Removing those screws is how this whole project started...
With the shade boards removed, we began to think about how to provide shade. I installed a shade cloth to see how we liked it. Even if it spanned the entire roof, it still looked janky.
So we decided to put a proper roof on it, which meant first removing all the beams.
I then hoisted two of the beams atop a vertical post, and bolted it all into place. Note the existing 45-degree supports between the posts and the north-south beams.
Next came all the joists for the slope. You can also see that also added 45-degree supports to east-west beams to ensure stability with the added load of the roof.
Here's the sheathing being installed. I first sprayed the tongue & groove boards with a satin clear coat in my garage.
