I’m always finding ways to save my clients money on their home repairs. And sometimes, handyman work requires creativity and real skill with advanced tools. In this recent case, a small piece of siding broke off of a client’s house and they asked me to replace it. Unable to find a similar piece at the big-box stores, I went to the Truckee/Tahoe lumber yard. They didn’t carry it either, but could provide it as a special order. Unfortunately, such orders are usually purchased in large quantities and they have a $400 setup charge, plus the cost of the wood. That seemed silly given that I only needed about 5 inches worth. So, I bought a 1×8″ piece of cedar and cut it into this wedge shape on my table saw, which fit perfectly onto the house. As a result, a potentially $700 job was just $200.
